The J Pierce Rd Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project is situated minutes from the rural communities of Gracemere and Bouldercombe in Central Queensland, occupying a land area of around 11 hectares (28 acres). The proposed facility will have a storage capacity of 1600 megawatt-hours (MWh).
If approved, this project would be built just a few hundred meters from neighbouring homes and just 2 kilometres from residential Gracemere.
Construction is anticipated to commence by late 2026, incorporating a dedicated 275 kV grid connection. Powerlink has been appointed as the network provider.
Community Concerns

- Fire Risk: Lithium-ion batteries can catch fire and are difficult to extinguish, especially in rural areas with limited firefighting resources and equipment.
- Proximity to homes: The proposed site is only a few hundred metres from rural homes and less than 2km from residential Gracemere.
- Property value impact: Residents fear the project may devalue properties and affect future land use.
- Community conflict: The proposal pits neighbour against neighbour — bringing industrial development into a rural area where some stand to profit while others bear the impact.
- Lack of consultation: Community members report no prior engagement or consultation from the developer or Powerlink.
